Where Vermont Ranks Among Pizza-Loving States

Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

Vermont is a state noted for its cheese production. Pizza is all but unthinkable without cheese. So, it’s natural that the Green Mountain State has a long-standing connection with pizza. Perhaps you can order up a slice while you look over Vermont sports betting lines that have become available for legal wagering in the past few weeks.

According to worldpopulationreview.com statistics, Vermont is No. 11 in the nation in cheese production, with more than 12 million pounds in 2023. But when you consider its small size, both in land area (No. 45 among 50 states) and population (second smallest, only ahead of Wyoming), the fact that Vermont ranks that high speaks to the deep roots that the dairy industry has in the state.

National Pizza Day is Feb. 9. Ahead of that, we developed a list of states that love to eat pizza the most. BetVermont.com, the place to find the best Vermont sportsbook promo codes, combined two statistics to arrive at our rankings. We checked Statista.com for the number of pizzerias per 100,000 people in each state. Then we turned to Google Trends to find the volume of searches for “pizza” over a 12-month span (Feb. 1, 2023, to Feb. 1, 2024). After averaging out those two stats, we came up with this list:

Notable Vermont Cheeses

Vermont sports betting apps are new, but the state’s reputation for quality dairy has stood the test of time.

Cabot, Grafton Village, Shelburne Farms, Crowley and Willow Hill Farm are just a few of the many farms producing the cheese for which Vermont is known. According to the Vermont Cheese Council website, there are more than 40 cheese-making farms – that is a lot in a state that is a bit less than 10,000 square miles. So getting good quality cheese for your pizza should be no problem in Vermont.

On our list, Vermont ranks No. 14 among the most pizza-loving states in America. At 28.2 pizzerias per 100,000 people, Vermont ranks No. 14 in that category. Rhode Island is first at 37.3 pizza joints per 100K population, followed by Connecticut (36.8) and Pennsylvania (36.2). As far as search volume, Vermont is rated No. 20 on our list with a score of 60 (measured by search volume compared to other topics).

Other Northeast states are high on our list as well: Connecticut is second, New Hampshire is fifth, Massachusetts is sixth and Maine comes in just ahead of Vermont at No. 14. DraftKings Vermont Sportsbook has +4000 odds on the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series this year – New England’s love of pizza is perhaps only rivaled by its passion for the region’s MLB team.
