Vermont Sports Betting Launches: What You Need To Know

Vermont Sports Betting Launches: What You Need To Know
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

At the stroke of midnight Thursday, Vermont sports betting officially launched. Three sportsbook operators in the Green Mountain State began accepting mobile sports betting wagers: Boston-based DraftKings, Fanatics Sportsbook and FanDuel.

Vermont, the first state to launch sports betting in 2024, is New England’s sixth state to offer legal, regulated sports wagering. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have already been legalized. Maine launched a little over two months ago, on Nov. 3, 2023.

Just a reminder: In-state college sports betting is prohibited unless, for example, Vermont makes the NCAA Tournament – that goes for any tournament that has a minimum of four teams participating. All other college sports are legal to wager on.

Three Vermont Sports Betting Operators

Here is a breakdown of the three operators that are now live in the Green Mountain State.

DraftKings Vermont Sportsbook: Vermont is the 26th state DraftKings is live in, in addition to Ontario, Canada. DK is now live in five of the six New England states and is one of the top two operators nationwide, built on the back of its brand recognition from its daily fantasy sports product, just like its main rival (more on that later).

In conjunction with the launch, DK has pledged $25,000 to the Arbor Day Foundation to support a large-scale reforestation planting project throughout Vermont, assisting the Vermont Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program in planting 3,500 trees to help form “riparian buffers” along streams and rivers to improve water quality flowing to Lake Champlain.

Fanatics Sportsbook Vermont: Vermont is the 10th state where Fanatics Sportsbook is available online including Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. They also have 13 retail locations including outside of Progressive Field in Cleveland and Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Fanatics also boasts the only sportsbook inside an NFL stadium at FedExField, home of the Washington Commanders.

FanDuel: The well-known operator is already live in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Like DraftKings, FanDuel first built its name as a daily fantasy sports operator. Now FanDuel Vermont Sportsbook gives the company 21 states where it offers mobile sports betting.

Betting Could Bring $7M To State In First Year

Back on June 14, Gov. Phil Scott signed House Bill 127, a bill legalizing online sports wagering in the state and authorized the Department of Liquor and Lottery to contract with operators to operate a sportsbook through a mobile platform. The bill also provided additional resources to enhance the state’s responsible gaming services.

Vermont will receive a percentage of each operator’s Adjusted Gross Sports Wagering Revenue, in addition to an operator fee. The launch of mobile sports betting is expected to bring in up to $7 million dollars in new revenue to the state during the first full year of operation.
