Vermont To Launch Mobile Sports Betting In January

In less than one month, the entire New England region will have legalized sports betting as the Green Mountain State announced Tuesday it will launch online sports betting in Vermont with three operators.

Governor Phil Scott and the state’s Department of Liquor and Lottery Commissioner Wendy Knight announced that online sports wagering will launch in Vermont on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024.

Through a competitive bid process, the department has selected three operators - DraftKings, Fanatics Sportsbook and FanDuel - to operate mobile sports wagering platforms in the state. A pre-registration period opens today, allowing the operators to pre-register players and market their brands before the launch.

“I first proposed Vermont legalize sports wagering several years ago, and it’s good to see it come to fruition,” said Governor Scott in a news release. “Vermonters and visitors alike will soon be able to access a regulated sports wagering marketplace, which will come with important consumer protections and generate revenue for the State.”

Vermont is New England’s sixth state to launch sports wagering, as Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have already been legalized. Maine launched on Nov. 3.

Launch Could Bring State $7 Million In First Year

On June 14, Gov. Scott signed House Bill 127, a bill legalizing online sports wagering in the state and authorized the Department of Liquor and Lottery to contract with operators to operate a sportsbook through a mobile platform. The bill also provided additional resources to enhance the State’s responsible gaming services.

“We are excited to offer sports enthusiasts the ability to engage in sports wagering in Vermont with three of the industry’s top companies,” said Commissioner Knight.

Vermont will receive a percentage of each operator’s Adjusted Gross Sports Wagering Revenue, in addition to an operator fee. The launch of mobile sports betting is expected to bring in up to $7 million dollars in new revenue to the state during the first full year of operation.
